Safer Recruitment & Vetting

Safer Recruitment & Vetting

We work tirelessly so you can book staff cover with the peace of mind that all our candidates have been vetted beyond DfE guidelines.

 All candidates are:

  • DBS Enhanced Disclosure / DBS Barred List Checked

  • Interviewed face-to-face

  • Identity & Right to Work Checked

  • Comprehensively referenced – including a reference from their most recent employer.

Safer Recruitment and Vetting

Step Teachers takes its safeguarding role very seriously and all our workers are vigorously vetting before being selected for work.

Our vetting procedures are designed to surpass the requirements placed on us by the Department for Education’s recently released 'Keeping Children Safe in Education' guidance document. We are REC Education members and were awarded REC Audited Education Status in December 2013.  Prior to this we were holders of the DfE Quality Mark for several years before it was abolished.

The REC Education Audited award verifies that our procedures are in accordance with The Conduct of Employment Agencies and Employment Businesses Regulations 2003, the REC Code of Professional Practice and safeguarding practices in relation to children.

The following checks and procedures are carried out for all of our staff:

  • Full Identity check

  • DBS Barred List Check

  • DBS Enhanced Disclosure

  • Qualifications

  • References

  • Health Declaration

  • Right to Work.

Our safety first approach means our schools are guaranteed peace of mind; enabling them to meet Ofsted’s safeguarding responsibilities.  For more information download our Recruitment, Selection and Vetting Policy

Vetting Checklist & Assignment Confirmation

Step Teachers were the first agency to offer schools written confirmation of our workers' vetting checks before they begin work; even daily supply.  The Vetting Checklist states the checks that we have carried out including identification, qualifications, NCTL Prohibition Check and DBS.

The Vetting Checklist has been developed to meet Ofsted’s Single Central Record requirements but it goes beyond them.  The positive feedback this document has received from schools gives us confidence that you too will find it very useful.  Without such written confirmation, you have no official confirmation that the supply teacher attending your school later that morning has had the necessary checks carried out.  All good agencies should be able to provide this automatically; without you having to ask!  View our Sample Vetting Checklist and get in touch if you'd like more information.

Assignment Confirmation

In addition to the above, we also send you an Assignment Confirmation for every assignment you place with us before the candidate attends your school.  This sets out the assignment details and candidate's details including their photo and any other relevant notes.  This ensures that there are no discrepancies between us.
