At Step Teachers, we’ve always believed that the wellbeing of pupils and educators must be at the heart of the education system. That’s why we’re proud to support YoungMinds, a charity working tirelessly to champion children’s mental health. In addition to be partnering with our Step Perks programme that provides free counciling and GP Service for all our candidates
Last week, YoungMindsshared a powerful call to action:
These words struck a chord with us. We know, from speaking to thousands of teachers and teaching assistants across the country, that exam-related stress is not a headline, it’s a daily reality.
In recent years, we've seen a record number of young people referred for NHS mental health support, and over 40% of them say exams are a key cause. That’s not just concerning, it’s a signal that something fundamental needs to change.
With the Government reviewing school assessments, the moment for honest reflection is now.
The Question We’re Asking:
What do you think needs to change?
As someone on the front lines, whether in EYFS, primary, secondary, or SEND what’s your perspective on SATs, GCSEs, and the impact of high-stakes exams?
Do you believe:
SATs are no longer fit for purpose?
There should be more room for coursework and subject-specific assessments?
A reimagined system could actually improve learning outcomes and wellbeing?
Or are there benefits to traditional exams we’re at risk of losing?
At Step Teachers, we’re listening. This isn’t about politics, it’s about people. Our pupils, our classrooms, our future.
