Job description

We are looking for a resilient and compassionate SEMH Teaching Assistant to support students with social, emotional, and mental health needs. This role is ideal for someone with a passion for helping young people overcome barriers to learning and thrive both academically and personally. Beginning September 2025.

Duties as SEMH Teaching Assistant:

 

  • Provide 1:1 or small group support to pupils with SEMH needs, helping them manage emotions, behaviour, and social interactions.

  • Work closely with teachers, SENCOs, and pastoral staff to implement personalised strategies and support plans.

  • Create a safe, nurturing environment where pupils feel valued and understood.

  • Support pupils both in the classroom and during unstructured times (e.g., breaks and transitions).

  • Help de-escalate challenging behaviours and apply consistent behaviour management techniques.

  • Encourage student engagement, confidence, and resilience through positive reinforcement and structured routines.

Ideal SEMH Teaching Assistant:

 

  • Has experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs or behavioural challenges.

  • Is calm, patient, and emotionally intelligent.

  • Can build trusting, positive relationships with vulnerable learners.

  • Understands trauma-informed practice and behaviour support strategies (training provided if needed).

  • Is reliable, adaptable, and works well in a team as SEMH Teaching Assistant.

  • Holds a relevant qualification (e.g. Level 2/3 TA, Childcare, Youth Work, or equivalent) – desirable but not essential.
