Job description

We are seeking an inspirational and experienced Head of English to lead a vibrant English department with passion, purpose, and vision. This is a fantastic opportunity for a dynamic classroom practitioner with leadership experience who is ready to drive progress, raise standards, and promote a love of language and literature across the school. Beginning September 2025.

Duties as Head of English:

 

  • Lead and manage the English department, including staff development, curriculum planning, and quality assurance.

  • Deliver high-quality English lessons across KS3 and KS4 (and KS5 if applicable).

  • Monitor and track student progress to ensure excellent outcomes at all levels.

  • Oversee the development and implementation of schemes of work and assessments.

  • Promote a culture of high expectations and continual improvement.

  • Line manage and support a team of English teachers and support staff.

  • Contribute to whole-school leadership initiatives and policy development.

Ideal Head of English:

 

  • A qualified teacher with QTS and significant experience teaching English in a secondary setting.

  • Proven track record of raising attainment and leading curriculum innovation.

  • Strong leadership, communication, and organisational skills as Head of English.

  • A deep understanding of English pedagogy, assessment, and the national curriculum.

  • A strategic thinker with a passion for literature, language, and student success.

  • Experience mentoring or developing colleagues is highly desirable.
