Job description

Are you a patient and compassionate individual with a passion for supporting learners who have profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD)? A caring special school is seeking a dedicated PMLD Teaching Assistant to provide personalised support and help students reach their full potential. Beginning ASAP.

Duties as a PMLD Teaching Assistant:

 

  • Support students on a one-to-one or small group basis, adapting activities to meet individual needs.

  • Assist with personal care tasks such as feeding, toileting, and mobility, following individual care plans and maintaining dignity at all times.

  • Use a range of communication methods (e.g. Makaton, PECS, sensory cues) to help pupils engage and express themselves.

  • Monitor and record student progress, sharing observations with teachers, parents, and therapists.

  • Help create a calm, inclusive, and stimulating classroom environment.

  • Collaborate with teachers, physiotherapists, and other professionals to support holistic development.

  • Attend staff meetings, training sessions, and contribute to whole-school initiatives.

Ideal PMLD Teaching Assistant:

 

  • Experience working with children or young people with PMLD, complex needs, or in a care environment is highly desirable.

  • A warm, patient, and resilient approach, with excellent communication and teamwork skills as a PMLD Teaching Assistant.

  • A willingness to undertake training in moving and handling, medical needs, or specialist communication methods.

  • A strong understanding of safeguarding and child protection practices.
