Job description
Primary PRU Mentor - Manchester - Step Teachers
Start: ASAP (September 2025) Pay: £95/day (PAYE)
Hours: Full-Time Mon-Fri 8:30am-3:30pm
We're working with a Primary PRU (Pupil Referral Unit) in Manchester, supporting young children with SEMH needs, challenging behaviour, and exclusions from mainstream settings. This role is perfect for someone who's calm, confident, and ready to make a real impact in a specialist behaviour-focused setting.
You'll be working closely with children aged 5-11, delivering 1:1 and small group support, helping them regulate emotions, improve behaviour, and re-engage with learning. You'll need to use Team Teach strategies, build strong, positive relationships, and stay steady when things get tough.
Great fit if you've got a background in Psychology, youth work, or SEND, and have Team Teach training. You've worked with children or young people for at least 3 months and know how to stay patient, firm, and empathetic in high-pressure situations.
What's in it for you:
- £95/day PAYE (no umbrella company)
- Equal pay to perm staff in the same role after 13 weeks
- DBS refund after 20 working days
- Free CPD training (including SEMH & de-escalation)
- Step Perks: 24/7 GP access, retail & gym discounts
- £100 Refer-a-Friend scheme
- Personal support from a dedicated consultant with over a decade of local experience
About the PRU:
Small, tightly knit team with a big focus on emotional regulation, behaviour support, and trauma-informed practice. Highly respected in the local community as an outstanding provider of education for children outside mainstream school. Structured routines and strong relationships are key. Easily accessible by bus and train.
You'll need:
- Team Teach certification (essential)
- 3 months' experience with children/young people
- Up-to-date CV with 10-year history
- Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willing to apply)
- At least 2 professional references covering last 2 years
- Proof of right to work in the UK
- Overseas Police Check if needed
- A resilient, proactive, and supportive mindset
