Job description

Autism Teaching Assistant – 1:1 Support (Salford)

Step Teachers are working with a fantastic special school in Salford who are looking for a dedicated Autism Teaching Assistant to provide 1:1 support. This role is ideal for someone who is patient, resilient and passionate about helping young people with additional needs succeed.

The Basics

This is a full-time role, Monday to Friday, 8:30am–3:30pm, starting as soon as possible. Pay is £90–100 per day (depending on experience), paid PAYE with no umbrella companies. For the right candidate, there’s also the potential to move into a permanent position.

Extra’s for you

As part of the Step Teachers team, you’ll benefit from the support of an experienced consultant with over 10 years in education recruitment. We’ll refund your DBS after 20 working days, ensure you receive equal pay to permanent staff from week 13, and offer perks such as Free CPD, retail discounts and a refer-a-friend bonus.

The Role

In this role, you’ll be providing 1:1 support to a Year 9 pupil with Autism. The student has social, emotional and sensory needs, along with some challenging behaviours. You’ll play a key role in helping them access learning, manage emotions, and feel safe and supported in the classroom. This will include using positive behaviour strategies, adapting your approach to meet their individual needs, and encouraging small but meaningful steps forward.

You’ll also work closely with the class teacher, SENCO, therapists and parents to ensure a consistent and supportive approach, while keeping track of progress and helping to celebrate achievements along the way.

Your New Workplace

The school is a welcoming special provision for pupils aged 9–19 with moderate to complex learning needs. Rated Outstanding by Ofsted, it offers small classes, excellent resources and a strong, supportive team who are passionate about creating a nurturing environment where every child can thrive.

What you need

  • We’re looking for someone with previous experience supporting children with SEN, ideally those with Autism and behavioural needs.
  • You’ll need a valid DBS (or be willing to apply), the right to work in the UK, and recent references covering the last two years.
  • Just as importantly, you’ll bring reliability, empathy and a commitment to making a real difference to a young person’s education and wellbeing.
  • Previous experience as a SEN Teaching Assistant is preferred!
