Job description

Are you passionate about supporting young people with social, emotional and mental health needs? We are looking for a calm, resilient and empathetic SEMH Teaching Assistant to join an inclusive and nurturing team. Your support can help transform a child’s school experience and future. Beginning September 2025.

Duties as SEMH Teaching Assistant:

 

  • Work closely with pupils who may have experienced trauma, attachment difficulties, anxiety or behaviour challenges.

  • Provide individual and small group support to help children regulate emotions, build confidence, and engage with learning.

  • Build trusted relationships with pupils and act as a consistent, supportive presence.

  • Work alongside teachers, SENCOs and external professionals to implement personalised support plans.

  • Promote a positive, structured environment using restorative and therapeutic approaches.

  • Support behaviour de-escalation, emotional regulation, and reintegration into the classroom.

Ideal SEMH Teaching Assistant:

 

  • Experience working with children with SEMH needs or behavioural challenges (desirable).

  • A compassionate, patient and trauma-informed approach.

  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills as an SEMH Teacher.

  • Confidence in managing behaviour calmly and positively.

  • An understanding of safeguarding and the importance of consistency and boundaries.

  • Willingness to undertake training (e.g. Team Teach, de-escalation, mental health first aid).
