Job description

We are looking for a compassionate and resilient Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) Teaching Assistant to join a dedicated team on a long-term temporary contract. This is a rewarding opportunity to support children and young people who need additional help to engage with learning and build positive relationships. Starting as soon as possible.

Duties as a SEMH Teaching Assistant:

 

  • Provide one-to-one and small-group support for pupils with SEMH needs, helping them access the curriculum and develop social and emotional skills.

  • Build trusting relationships and use de-escalation strategies to manage challenging behaviour.

  • Assist teachers in adapting lessons and resources to meet individual targets and support plans.

  • Monitor and record pupil progress, sharing updates with staff, parents and external professionals.

  • Promote a safe, inclusive and nurturing environment that encourages confidence and independence.

Ideal SEMH Teaching Assistant:

 

  • Experience working with children or young people with SEMH or behavioural needs (school setting preferred).

  • Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant/Supporting Teaching & Learning qualification, or equivalent, desirable.

  • Strong communication skills, empathy and a calm, patient approach as an SEMH Teaching Assistant.

  • Understanding of safeguarding and a commitment to the welfare of all pupils.
