Job description
We are seeking a dedicated SEMH Teaching Assistant for a full-time, long-term temporary role starting as soon as possible.
This opportunity is within a secondary school that provides fresh starts and new beginnings for pupils who have often experienced challenges in mainstream education. Staff build warm and trusting relationships with pupils, helping them feel safe, respected and ready to re-engage with learning. The school promotes high expectations for achievement and behaviour, and offers enriching experiences that support personal development and future success.
SEMH Teaching Assistant – Key Responsibilities
- Provide classroom and 1:1 support to pupils with SEMH needs
- Assist pupils in managing behaviour, anxiety and emotional regulation
- Support pupils in re-engaging with learning and developing positive routines
- Collaborate with teaching staff and pastoral teams to personalise support
- Promote a calm, inclusive and respectful school culture
- Contribute to enrichment activities and wider school initiatives
- Uphold safeguarding responsibilities and maintain accurate records
SEMH Teaching Assistant – Ideal Candidate
- Holds a recognised SEND qualification (Level 3 or equivalent)
- Has prior experience supporting pupils with SEMH needs in a secondary school setting
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills as an SEMH Teaching Assistant
- Ability to build trusting relationships with pupils and staff
- Committed to promoting pupil wellbeing and academic progress
- Understanding of safeguarding practices and procedures
- Flexible, resilient and able to adapt to individual pupil needs
